New linotype installed in Record-Courier office. [article as written:] The reading matter inthis issue of the Record-Courier is set on our new linotype machine, which arrived last week. A.R. Linder, mechinist in the pany, arrived Friday noon and by nine o'clock that evening had the machine asembled and ready to run. Saturday morning the machine was put in operation for the first time and thefirst slug cast was the name ofthe publisher'sinfant daughter..

May 31, 1929

A noxious weed, heretofore foreign to Carson Valley, but one that has caused great damage to farm crops in many western states, has made it appearance here. The week is known as White Top or Lapedium draba and its discovery was made on a farm here last week. The fact was immediately communicated to H. Schweis, head of plant and insect quarantine control for Nevada and an expert was sent here to determine whether or not the weed was white top.

May 28, 1959

University of Nevada will hold its 69th annual commencement exercises on the Reno campus at 10 a.m. June 1. Noted American poet and philosopher Carl Sandburg will deliver the commencement address. His talk will be on "The Current Human Scene." Theme for the 1959 ceremonies will be an observance of the Lincoln sesquicentennial, marking the 150th anniversary of his birth.

May 24, 1984

Xebec's Gardnerville plant remains open as state and county investigators continue to look for the cause of incidents that sent nearly 40 employees to the Carson Valley Health Center for treatment of diarrhea, sore throats, difficulty breathing and passing out. Involved in the investigation are the Environmental Protection Agency, Nevada Occupational Safety and Health and the Douglas County Health Department."We are checking the water, the air, the air conditioning, the food in the cafeteria, any pesticides which might have been used in the area, everything," said Tom Johnsen, director of administrative services of Douglas County.

May 26, 1999

Douglas junior Chris Chappell continued his climb toward a state record and senior Jenny Smokey finished her DHS career in style at the state track and field meet in Las Vegas. Chappell claimed the state championship in the pole vault with a personal-best and school-record jump of 15 feet, 3 inches.
