Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department offers classes for children to seniors. Information and registration at the recreation office, 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or at 782-9828.

Youth challenger British soccer camp

Camps provide in-depth instruction of core values, skills and tactics to ages 5 to 16. Camp is July 20-24 at Stodick Park. Half-day camp is 9 a.m. to noon. Cost, $150. Full-day camp is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost, $220.

Introduction to horses

Students age 5 to 15 learn about horses, grooming, equipment and hands-on horsemanship. Class is 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 14-Aug. 4, at Mountain View Equestrian Center in Minden. Cost is $80.


Students age 3 and older learn ballet and develop concentration, imagination, coordination, self-discipline and confidence. Classes held at World Gym.

Concealed weapon certification

Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements. Class is 6-9:30 p.m. July 15 and July 17 at the Recreation Annex Building and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 18 at the Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus an additional $10 insurance fee.

Beginning painting

Students may choose to work in oil, watercolor or acrylics. Instructor assists each student with how to paint a picture. Students need to provide supplies. Class is 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, July 8-26, at the recreation annex building. Cost is $100.


Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, July 2-30 at the recreation annex building. Bring an exercise mat. Cost is $40.

Parenting from your heart

The class explores how to understand the needs behind your children's behaviors. Learn to parent effectively without relying on threat of punishments or promise of reward. Class is 8 a.m. to noon July 18 and July 25 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $20.

Ballroom Dance

Learn the fundamentals for the fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Class is 7-8 p.m. Thursdays, July 9-23, at the Dance Workshop in Minden. Cost is $70 per couple.
