First historical society swap meet Saturday

There are less than two weeks left to enter the June photo contest. This is one of those months that has a lot going on. Finding the perfect photo should be easy. Hope to see your entry soon.

The first of the Douglas County Historical Society's summer swap meets 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Call today and arrange for booth space for only $10. If you don't want to sell, plan on coming out to see what's new and what's selling this year. We're always looking for buyers. The next swap meet is June 27.

There will be no Student-Senior Day in July because of the July 4th holiday. The lecture series on July 9 will feature our own Laurie Hickey speaking about the Trail to the Promised Land. This is the story of the Carson River Route of the Emigrant Trail through Carson Valley to Tragedy Springs. The trail is still visible today, 159 years later. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $3 to non-DCHS members and free for members.

July swap meets will be held on July 11 and July 25. While the weather is still cool, plan a morning cleaning out the garage or the attic and arrange for a booth to sell your excess. There is someone out there just waiting for what you have to sell.

August is another month with lots to do. Student-Senior Day is Aug. 1 and will be held later than usual. We will be showing the movie filmed in Carson Valley, "Chicken Every Sunday," at 2 p.m. When the movie is over, you can go directly out to the parking lot for our annual Taste of the Towns. While admission to the movie is free, tickets for the Taste of the Towns event are $20 for DCHS members or $25 for non-members. Purchase tickets in advance to make sure to get yours before we run out.

You will also be able to pre-order your copy of the 2010 DCHS calendar at the Taste of the Towns this year. We'll have order forms and all the winning photos on display for you to see in the parking lot of the Gardnerville museum that night. No need to bring money; just decide how many copies you'd like to send to friends who aren't lucky enough to live here.

The August lecture series continues Aug. 13, and the August swap meets will be held on Aug. 13 and 22. Summer doesn't go quite that fast, but it sure does fly by. Don't miss the fun we have planned this year.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
