Carson Valley Days sports roundup

Carson Valley Days weekend is quickly becoming one of the biggest sports weekends of the year in Douglas County.

While the traditional adult softball tournament has been around every year for well over 20 years, a rodeo, youth softball tournament and 5K/10K run have cropped up as well.

The latest addition this year was the inagural Carson Valley Days grass volleyball tournament on Sunday at Lampe Park.

The tournament, a joint venutre between Douglas County Parks & Recreation and the 20-30 Club, crowned champions in three divisions - open, women's and reverse coed.

"It was a really nice weekend," recreation coordinator Andy Braun said. "We want to make it an annual event. We had 12 teams out. Next year we're hoping to double that."

Each team played three games in pool play for seeding in a single-elimination tournament.

Team Gi won the open championship after completing an undefeated slate. The Reno-based team included Yusuke Ohji, Kuna Nakagawa, Thomas Awe and Sergio Casteneda.

The Otter Pops won the women's division. Team members were Whitney and Staci Estes, Jami Houston, Desiree Hiett and Morgan McKay.

Jellin captured the reverse coed division, outlasting the Gerber team in the finals. Team members included Inger and Dana Aiono, Cameo Lommori, Brandon Roberts and Troy Valenzuela.

Fallon-based "Still Tryin'" won the team title in the Minden Ranch Rodeo Buckaroo Fest X. Team members were Clint Allegre, Jesse Nuttal, Tyson Torvick and Dennis Lee.

Kings River Ranch out of Lovelock (TJ Thompson, Isiah Jones, Nortbert Gibson, Woody Harney) took second, Fallon's Lee Stock Horses (Flint Lee, Kenny Lee, Cowboy Rodriguez, Gansalo Carlos) was third and Lovelock's Carwil (Phill Miller, Ray Hardy, Nathan Kelly Jr., Tub Blanthorn) took fourth.

Todd Gansberg, competing for Gardnerville's N5 team, won the ranch horse class.

Thompson and Harney won the team roping event and Thompson and Jones won the big loop roping event.

Jimmy Lee, Russell Funk, Mike Johns and Matt Hoekinga of Fallon's Z Hanging X won the ranch doctoring event.

The Carwil team won the branding event.

The Lee Stock team won wild cow milking and Buck Fulstone of Bridgeport's Centennial Livestock won saddle bronc.

Harney was named top hand and Allegre earned the Hard Luck/Iron Man Award.

Turbulence, a team run by Valley resident Jim Crozier, won the Carson Valley Days Softball Tournament at Lampe Park after fighting through the loser's bracket.

They beat Aftermatch, a team including Gardnerville residents Dave Cruz and Drew Arigoni, twice for the title.

Reno-based D-12 took third, the Grasshoppers, a local team run by James Evans, took fourth. The Bucks, which included former Washington State and Douglas High baseball standout Bruce Jacobsen, took fifth.

The tournament had 16 teams total.

The Carson Valley Days Walk, Jog, Run for Prevention enjoyed a large turnout in its second year opening the parade down Main Street.

Agustin Arrog won the overall 5K with a time of 17:54 and Henares Mendes won the overall 10K with a time of 36:32.

Angie Maw was the top female in the 10K with a time of 41.56 and Ellen Lucas was the top female in the 5K with a time of 21:09.
