Fishing: Sawmill Pond derby this weekend

Hello fellow anglers, or should I say lil' anglers.

Saturday will be the annual derby at Sawmill Pond, located two miles south of the "Y" on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

The derby is from 8 a.m. to noon.

The derby is free to all kids 14 years of age and younger (that is the state rule, not ours).

Remember this is a kid's derby, which means the kids have to do the actual fishing.

Adults are welcome to help but can not do the actual fishing. Just a couple rules this year.

During the derby we ask that no lures are used and that all lawn chairs or coolers on the meadow side be at least 15 feet back from the pond to give ample room for the kids to fish.

The Optimist Club will be on hand serving hot dogs and refreshments, Raley's will be on hand to help coordinate the event and the boy from the Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters will be there to lend a helping hand.

Tannier's copiers will be volunteering at the fish cleaning station and yours truly will be there with loaner rods and reels for those who do not have one.

All of this is brought to you by our community at no charge to any one.

I would like to thank Walmart of Carson City for their donation of prizes, also a big thank you to the group from the Lampe Park kids derby who donated more poles and extra tackle.

I would also like to apologize to the Lampe Park group for any embarrasment I caused them last week when they donated the poles.

I hope to see you all on Saturday morning at Sawmill Pond in South Lake Tahoe. If you have any questions, call the Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters at (530) 541-8208 Good fishin' and tight lines.
