Memorial weekend report

Hello fellow anglers.

Yes, the Naw is on vacation. But I wanted to take some time to let you know what is happening on our fishing world, and what is not.

But first, for our young anglers, starting next weekend it's all about you kids.

The Lampe Park free Kids Fishing Derby is on June 3 and 4. But for this derby you must be pre-registered.

Now don't let that scare you. It's real easy. You can do it four different ways. Call Pam Rodrigues at 265-1795 or e-mail at nevadabobe@aol.com.

Or you can call Trent Dowell at 267-2724 or you can e-mail him at kfdvolunteers@aol.com. This will give you all the information to get your youngster signed up. Registration is open for kids 3 to 12 years of age. Now for those people that would like to take part in this event as a volunteeer, your help would be very much appreciated. They need people on the river to help with netting fish to baiting hooks, to untangling lines, and people to clean fish. Plus I'm sure they need help in many other areas. Please call one of the numbers above and give a little of your time to help put a smile on the kids faces as well as yours.

Note: volunteers must be 13 years of age and older, so in my book that means Don Quilici qualifies at least four times, maybe five.

Now for the next weekend, we move to South Lake Tahoe. We're talking Sawmill Pond on the corner of Sawmill Road and Lake Tahoe Boulevard. This event will be on June 10 starting at 8 a.m. to approximatley noon. At this derby, there is no pre-registration nessesary. As in the last 15 years, the Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe and Raley's will be on hand to ensure we all have fun.

Again this is a free derby for kids 14 years of age and younger. Basically anything you need will be provided, with the exception of catching the fish. There will be volunteers on hand to help out. Raley's will provide tackle packs and loaner poles to those who need them. The Optimist Club will be cooking hot dogs and serving soda and water to all. And as every year these two fine groups always seem to come up with some nice raffle prizes. And remember this is free to all kids who paticipate. We are looking for people to help on the pond netting baiting and of course untangling lines, or to help with our loaner poles. This not only a fun day, but an alternative to inspire our youth on a better path in life, away from drugs and gangs to use there spare time in a good way. Also, in years to come they might become a volunteer at this same event. Now let's see whats going on in our fishing world. On part of my vacation it took me completely over Carson Pass and back. It will reflect in various reports.

LAKE TAHOE: The mackinaw bite has been on for anglers going deep trolling flashers and a minnow. Best areas have been the nub located off Eldorado Beach, the Ski Run Shelf, or from Camp Richardson to the keys. Last week, Gene St. Denis took out four anglers and all came home with limits. With fish ranging 3 to 6 pounds. For more information, call Blue Ribbon Charters at (530) 544-6552. For those who have no boat, Cave Rock has been producing some average rainbows.

LAKE TAHOE TOPLINING: Mike Nielson caught a 14-pound brown trout trolling a Rapala. A report of an angler that stopped by the Sportsman to weigh in a little fish. The mackinaw came in at 21.7 pounds. For more info call the Sportsman at 530-542-FISH.

SILVER LAKE: I passed by last Sunday, and the lake is breaking up. There is open water by Kay's place, according to John Voss he gives it another two weeks to be open.

CAPLES LAKE: Next lake to pass. There was open water on the spillway and across the whole dam. Approximately 20 feet out, by now a little more. But the rest of the lake is still iced over, it is breaking up in the middle. Mr. Voss said week to 10 days to open. But as a word to the wise, make sure you have plenty of gas. As of last Sunday at the Kirkwood gas station the price for regular unleaded was $4.69 a gallon. But after you get over the hill the prices were semi-normal.

INDIAN CREEK: Beware of the sucker fish over by the dam area, last week Steve Lightfoot, Fready Williams, and myself fished for three hours to only get suckers.The lake was the highest I have seen it in over 10 years. There are a lot of big fish in there it's just now they have more room to cruise. for the fly anglers you almost cant miss on a damsel fly or a wooly bugger. CARSON RIVER: Both the east and the west fork are raging and will be for some time. There is still a ton of snow up there. Going over Carson Pass there was still a wall of snow 10- to 15-feet high next to the road. But that doesn't mean it's not fishable, look for the edies where fish will be holding.

TOPAZ LAKE: As of last week they had lowered the lake a little. The county camp ground will be open and a good thing is that it is not underwater, yet. An angler was fishing off the the rocks by the park and caught a 4.75-pound brown on an inflated night crawler. Chuck Fields told me the shore anglers have been having the best luck, using inflated crawlers or chartruese power bait. The boaters have been going a little deeper 10 to 15 feet to get into fish.
