Ten thousand sheep, owned by Julian Maisterina of Los Banos, near Fresno, are now being driven over the State Highway in this county to their summer range on the Mono forest on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains. They will take the state road to Lake Valley, thence on to the Alpine state highway to Hope Valley and down Woodford's canyon to the Mono Forest, passing northeast of Markleeville. The sheep are expected to break up the snow on the highway above Strawberry so that the road will be passable to Lake Tahoe by automobile.

Bucking, snorting outlaw horses, yelling and daring cowboys will be seen in action tomorrow and Sunday at a rodeo to be held at the high school grounds as part of the Carson Valley Day celebration. A goodly number of cowboys have already entered the riding contests and there will be keen rivalry for the prize money. While bucking horses will be the leading events on the program, pony races, steer riding and the like will be on the program.

Unexpectedly good weather conditions were experienced Monday as the Pacific Area Soaring Council's Region 11 South soaring championships closed five days of competition at the Douglas County Airport with a 231-mile task. Southern California's Al Leffler average nearly 100 mph over the triangular course to win the open class in a Nimbus 3 glider. A total of 57 entrants made the trip to Minden for the championships.

If the Carson Valley is to remain a pastoral, bucolic green open space, it will take the collaboration of all of us. This was the message presented to 100 farmers, ranchers, environmentalists, business leaders and community members who met last month in Part One of the Carson Valley Open Space and Agricultural Lands Protection workshop.
