Spend an afternoon at the Douglas County Public library with local authors

Authors sell their books, meet readers and sign autographs at the Douglas County Public Library's An Afternoon with Local Authors, 2-4 p.m. Feb. 7, at the Minden library. The free event features seven area authors.

Todd Borg is the author of the Owen McKenna mystery series set at Lake Tahoe. His novel, "Tahoe Silence," won the Ben Franklin Best Mystery of the Year Award. Borg also received Best Mystery and Best Thriller awards from the Bay Area Independent Publisher's Association.

Megan Avila is the 15-year-old author of "The Vitals: An Absolutely Essential Volume of Poetry." Her poems are her recollections and feelings of finding her place in life.

Reno writer Will Couvillier's poems of speculative fiction contemplate worlds unlike the real world. His story, "The Good Child," earned honorable mention in L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future contest in 2008.

Carson Valley resident Robert Ellison has been a teacher, deputy sheriff and business owner. His books on the history of Carson Valley include his latest, "Long Beard," the biography of Warren Wasson, an early Genoa pioneer and Nevada's first U.S. marshal.

Frank Rocha and granddaughter Melissa Ann wrote "Come Home Santa," an adventure story and the need to work together. Rocha's novels are "The Scope of Death," "The Scope of Death II: The Secret of Pine Summit" and "Life Beyond the Courtyard." He retired to Gardnerville after 28 years in California law enforcement.

Candace Stewart has facilitated support groups and has spoken on a range of subjects for caregivers of the elderly. Her book, "Welcome to Planet Alzheimer's," is a guide to caring for those with Alzheimer's disease.


Meet the Friends

The Friends of Douglas County Public Library's annual membership reception and election of officers is 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. The Friends of the Library help with extras such as reading program prizes, the Carson Valley Days float and the library's giant book sale, which provides income to add new books to the library's collection.
