Melodrama at museum

The Feb. 6-8 performances of the Douglas County Historical Society's "Hotel Minden" melodrama are sold out but a viewing of a dress rehearsal of the show has been added. Cost of 6 p.m. Feb. 5 dress rehearsal is $10, which includes hors d'oeuvres and a beverage. Walk-ins only at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville. Gung hay fat choy

Celebrate Chinese New Year of the Ox, 1-3:30 p.m. Feb. 7, at Gardnerville Elementary School, 1290 Toler Ave., Gardnerville.

Traditional Chinese music and dance will be performed by Sonia Carlson and the Chinese Cultural Group. Activities include Chinese calligraphy, origami, games, art and crafts and a New Year parade with Chinese lions. Chinese snacks will be served. Cost is $8 for ages 5 and older, $7 for seniors and free for children younger than 4 years.

'Chicken Every Sunday'

Student-Senior Day is Feb. 7 at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville. Screenings of the 1949 movie, "Chicken Every Sunday, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Part of the movie was filmed in Carson Valley and stars Celeste Holm and Dan Dailey. Museum tours led by costumed docents, 10 a.m. noon and 2 p.m. Free admission for seniors and students with accompanying adult on the first Saturday of the month. Information, 782-2555.

Carson Valley Inn entertainment

Hindsight continues in the Carson Valley Inn's Cabaret Lounge through Sunday, Blue Flame entertains Feb. 2-9 and Jo Mama plays Feb. 10-15.

Live entertainment presented with no cover and no minimum with five 45-minute shows starting on the hour at 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

Hindsight plays rhythm and blues, classic rock 'n' roll and pop music. The band is led by Larry Waller on keyboards and sax, Adina Pearl on vocals, Terry Caldwell on guitar, Leonardo Fields on bass and Derrick Autry on drums. Hindsight plays through Sunday.

Blue Flame is Melissa Dru on lead vocals, electric and acoustic guitar and percussion along with Mick Hampson on lead guitar and vocals. The duo brings a variety of sounds from all eras. Blue Flame plays Monday through Feb. 9.

Party and dance band Jo Mama plays a variety of music featuring funky rhythm and blues and light jazz. The band is Paul Covarelli and Rick O'Neil on vocals, drummer Bill Heise and Remmel Wilson on sax and keyboards. Jo Mama plays Feb. 10-15.

Super Bowl XLIII at CVI

The Carson Valley Inn celebrates Super Bowl with food and drink specials and football prize drawings on Sunday.

The Cafe Cabaret serves draft beer specials and football munchies including deli sandwich slices, hot dogs steamed in beer, barbecue brisket sandwiches, loaded chili dogs, chili bowls, nachos, pretzels with mustard and stadium popcorn buckets.

Prizes awarded during the game include Super Party XLIII shirts and official NFL Super Bowl merchandise. Super Party XLIII weekend also brings double points for INN Club members on Sunday and a $1,000 Super Bowl Grid for INN Club members playing in the casino.


World music

in concert series

The Carson Valley Arts Council 2008-09 concert series continues with world music group Kaweh on Feb. 6 at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden.

A wine, beer and cheese reception sponsored by Tahoe Ridge Winery is at 6 p.m. Desserts by Bravo Cafe & Bakery served at 8:30 p.m. Admission is a $15 donation at the door. Information, 782-8207.

The 2008-09 concert series continues with blues guitarist Chris Cain on March 13 and Mumbo Gumbo on May 8.

Collage workshop

The Copeland Cultural Arts Center hosts the Visual Journaling fundraising workshop, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 7. Artist Pam Brekas shows how to create personal collages. Bring scissors, favorite magazines, glue stick or scrapbooking adhesive. Cost of $50 benefits the Carson Valley Arts Council, 1572 Highway 395, Minden. Dinner dance for Austin's House

Austin's House presents the Mardi Gras Magic dinner and dance, 6 p.m. Feb. 20, in the Shannon Ballroom at the Carson Valley Inn. The fundraiser recreates the party atmosphere of New Orleans with music, dancing, prizes and food.

Cocktail hour begins 6 p.m. The event features dance music by Fabrizio, raffle drawings and silent auction. A grand prize drawing is for a vacation at Harrah's New Orleans.

The Cajun buffet dinner features peel and eat shrimp, chicken gumbo, blackened fish, Louisiana hot links steamed in beer, shrimp etouffee and smoked rib-eye roast with all the trimmings.

The ticket donation for Mardi Gras Magic to benefit Austin's House is $50. Tables of 10 are available. Only 200 tickets will be sold. Call 267-6711 to order tickets. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Genoa

Bridal fair Feb. 22

A bridal fair to showcase local wedding vendors is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club, one mile north of Genoa.

The open house is complimentary to those in the process of planning their weddings. Attendees will be able to taste chocolate, champagne, coffee and wine from the vendors of Destination Genoa.

Wedding vendors, professionals and location representatives to exhibit at the open house include Genoa area florists, wedding planners, photographers, food and beverage suppliers. The event features area bakeries, room accommodations and wedding/reception site providers.
