Local musicians are invited for an acoustic jam, 2:30 - 5 p.m. Jan. 25, at the Eddy Street Book Exchange. Musicians of any acoustic instrument of any level of experience or those who don't play but want to sing along are welcome. Celebrate Chinese New Year Feb. 7

Celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Ox, 1-3:30 p.m. Feb. 7, at Gardnerville Elementary School, 1290 Toler Ave., Gardnerville.

Traditional Chinese music and dance will be performed by Sonia Carlson and the Chinese Cultural Group. Activities include Chinese calligraphy, origami, games, art and crafts and a New Year parade with Chinese lions. Chinese snacks will be served. Cost is $8 for ages 5 and older, $7 for seniors and free for children younger than 4 years.

Minden

Carson Valley Inn entertainment

The Red Hot Smokin' Aces continue in the Carson Valley Inn's Cabaret Lounge through Saturday, The Gardners entertain on Sunday and the Trey Stone Duo perform Monday through Jan. 25.

Live entertainment presented with no cover and no minimum with five 45-minute shows starting on the hour at 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights.

The Red Hot Smokin' Aces play country and oldies to pop chart hits " from Gretchen Wilson to Stevie Wonder and Merle Haggard to Roy Orbison. The heart of band is father/daughter Jeffrey and Ileia who collectively have toured the northwest for more than 40 years.

The Gardners are Bob and Nancy Gardner who perform music from the past 50 years with an emphasis on '60s and '70s dance music.

Trey Stone on guitar and vocals and Rocky Sleight on keyboards and vocals perform a variety of pop, soul and jazz as the Trey Stone Duo. Stone toured with the legendary group Tower of Power and has appeared on "Saturday Night Live," David Sanborn's "Night Music" and MTV's "Rock in Rio" with Prince, George Michael and Run DMC.

Sleight has lived in and performed around Northern Nevada for more than 25 years. He arranges the music for the Trey Stone Duo and has performed with the Coasters, Drifters and Dolly Parton, among others.

Check out NFL playoffs at CVI

The Carson Valley Inn celebrates post-season NFL Football with food and drink specials and prizes.

The Cafe Cabaret will be open next to the Cabaret Lounge Sunday serving football munchies including deli sandwich slices, hot dogs steamed in beer, barbecue brisket sandwiches, loaded chili dogs, chili bowls, nachos, pretzels with mustard and popcorn buckets.

Raffle prizes awarded during the AFC and NFC Conference Championships on Sunday.

Food and drink specials will also be offered during Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 1. Prizes awarded during the game include Super Party XLIII shirts and official NFL Super Bowl merchandise.


Make wearable art

Artist Louise Howes presents a silk painting workshop, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at Artistic Viewpoints Gallery, 1572 Highway 395, Minden.

Howes teaches how to paint a scarf using the closed fence method of silk painting. Cost of class is $80 with an additional $40 for materials. Bring a smock or apron, sack lunch and No. 10 watercolor brush.

Concert series continues tonight

The Carson Valley Arts Council 2008-09 concert series continues with Great Basin Brass, 7 p.m. tonight at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda in Minden.

A wine, beer and cheese reception sponsored by Tahoe Ridge Winery is at 6 p.m. Desserts by Bravo Cafe & Bakery served at 8:30 p.m. Admission is a $15 donation at the door. Information, 782-8207.

The concert series continues with flamenco guitarist Kaweh on Feb. 6, blues guitarist Chris Cain on March 13 and Mumbo Gumbo on May 8.


Music at 88 Cups

Acoustic Solution plays, 7:15 p.m. Saturday, at 88 Cups Coffee and Tea, 1663 Lucerne St. in Minden Village. Acoustic Solution is John, Wendy and Seth Andrews who play eclectic folk and electrified acoustic music on a collection of instruments ranging from guitars, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, piano, percussion and drums. The band plays covers by Crosby, Stills and Nash, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Grateful Dead, and original material. Information, 783-0688.


Sign up for Inkheart party by Jan. 22

The Dragon Slayers, the Douglas County Public Library Teen Advisory Board, hosts an Inkheart celebration, 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23, at the library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden.

"Inkheart" and other books by Cornelia Funke will be featured in the free program for teens grades six through 12. The event includes games, pizza, soda and a chance to win tickets to the "Inkheart" movie.

Dinner dance for Austin's House

Austin's House presents the Mardi Gras Magic dinner and dance, 6 p.m. Feb. 20, in the Shannon Ballroom at the Carson Valley Inn. The fundraiser recreates the party atmosphere of New Orleans with music, dancing, prizes and food.

Cocktail hour begins 6 p.m. The event features dance music by Fabrizio, raffle drawings and silent auction. A grand prize drawing is for a vacation at Harrah's New Orleans.

The Cajun buffet dinner features peel and eat shrimp, chicken gumbo, blackened fish, Louisiana hot links steamed in beer, shrimp etouffee and smoked rib-eye roast with all the trimmings.

Eagles & Ag returns Feb. 27

The Eagles and Agriculture gathering in Carson Valley, Feb. 27 through March 1, is the year's best opportunity to view and photograph bald eagles and other birds of prey.

Eagles & Ag sessions are conducted by wildlife and ranching experts. Activities include falconing field demonstrations, a two-day wildlife photography workshop, a boat trip on the Carson River, and access to working ranches and historic barns in Carson Valley.

A bridal fair to showcase local wedding vendors is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.

The Great 4-H Fabric and Rummage Sale to benefit the Carson City/Storey County 4-H scholarship fund is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 17 and Jan. 31 at Carson City Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Road across from Costco.

'Beauty and the Beast' audition

Wild Horse Academy of the Arts hosts audition workshops on Jan. 24 for the upcoming production of Disney's "Beauty & the Beast, Jr." to prepare actors on audition skills and to allow a preview of the show. Performances of the Broadway junior version are April 24, 25, 26, May 1, 2, and 3 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City and at the CVIC Hall in Minden on May 10, 11 and 12.
