Could volunteering be your calling?

Cutbacks are everywhere so look for my column every other week. I will be alternating Wednesdays with Lynne Katusich who writes the Antelope Valley News column.

We keep hearing how desperate the Douglas County School District's budget is and how lots of employee positions as well as programs and classes offered are on the chopping block for next year. I have an idea that might be very rewarding to those of you who feel the calling to volunteer. Why not go down and talk to the secretary at your local school and see how your volunteering could help out the school?

I know the kindergarten, first and second grades can always use help with reading, paperwork, cutting out things and filing. Also each school library can always use help filing books back where they belong. Any way that people volunteer in the community is good, but the schools could really benefit from your help.

Recently there was an article in the paper asking for volunteers at the Minden library and the community responded so overwhelmingly that they had more than enough new applicants. So I'll put it out there " helping the schools. Could this be your calling?

Congratulations to third-grade teacher Mrs. Roy on the birth of her son. We wish you luck in the next couple of months adjusting to having a baby in the house and all the work it entails. You can e-mail Mrs. Roy with your wishes of luck at jroy@dcsd.k12.nv.us

Speaking once more about volunteering, the ice cream social which is Pinon Hills' most popular event is coming up soon and they need help not only on the day of the event but before and after. If you can spare a little time, please call Stacey Seavy at 267-9484 to participate.

One last request about volunteering: How about serving on the board of the Pinon Hills Parent-Teacher Organization? Elections are in April and May and it also may be something that could be very rewarding for you. Ron Santi is the gentleman to contact for information at 267-2774.
