Dugard kidnap suspect served time in Nevada

The man accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard 18 years ago in South Lake Tahoe, served time in Nevada State Prison for the rape and torture of a California woman.

Bernie Curtis, Nevada parole and probation chief, said Thursday records indicate suspect Phillip Garrido, 58, kidnapped a California woman from a convenience store in 1976, handcuffed and tied her up, and brought her to a storage shed in Reno where he raped and tortured her over six to eight hours.

Curtis said Garrido left the victim in the unlocked shed where she was found by a Reno police officer on patrol.

"That officer heard her muffled cries and saved her life," Curtis said.

Garrido was subject to federal and state prosecution.

He was sentenced to federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., where he served 10 years before being sent to Nevada.

Curtis said the federal and state sentences were concurrent, so Garrido served less than six months in Nevada before he was paroled to federal authorities in California under an interstate compact with Nevada.

Garrido lives in Antioch, Calif.

"He served three or four months in Nevada State Prison a couple of years before Jaycee Lee," Curtis said.

When he allegedly kidnapped Dugard, Garrido was under supervision by federal parole agents in California.

Curtis said on Thursday, Nevada placed a detainer on Garrido, now in custody in El Dorado County Jail in Placerville, for Nevada parole violation.

The El Dorado County District Attorney is to file criminal charges against Garrido and his wife, Nancy, 54, on Friday.

Dugard disappeared June 10, 1991 while walking to the bus stop on Washoan Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe on her way to school. She was an 11-year-old fourth grader.

Now 29, Dugard walked into a Concord, Calif., police station on Wednesday with the Garridos and authorities identified her as the kidnap victim.
