State senate thinks students should learn about finance

The Nevada Senate voted in favor of Senate Bill 317, legislation that would require financial literacy curriculum to be taught in Nevada's public high schools. SB 317, sponsored by Sen. Allison Copening (Clark Senate District 6) would educate Nevada's youth on the basics of the financial system, including managing a mortgage, understanding credit principles, and balancing personal budgets.

"These difficult economic times have taught us an important lesson about the value of financial literacy. It is our moral responsibility to prepare our youth for their adult life, and in these times, that includes basic principles of finance," said Senator Allison Copening. " To avoid another crisis, we need to make sure Nevadans do not once again fall prey to deceptive finance practices and the best place is to start with our youth."

The finance curriculum would be integrated throughout the high school experience, and would be required to be completed upon graduation.

The legislation will now go the Assembly for consideration.
