New market opens in former pharmacy

A small market is opening in the Stratton Center in Gardnerville, where the Carson Valley Pharmacy used to be.

A year ago, Carson City resident Kimberly Fisk Kalia opened the Sierra Market in Fernley. The success of the store spurred her to open a second location in Carson Valley.

"I was so pleased with the first store," the 34-year-old said last week. "I started scouting for another location."

Sierra Market will offer basic items and sundries, both deli and hot food, a variety of imported beers, and eventually produce.

"It will offer a little more than a convenience store," Fisk Kalia said. "I'm trying to get everything possible."

Fisk Kalia is not intimidated by the recession. She said her store will offer products "people always need."

"You can't put everything on hold just because people are saying the economy is bad," she said.

It doesn't hurt that Fisk Kalia is willing to go the extra mile for customers.

"If they want something we don't have, we're flexible," she said. "Everybody should drop by and check it out."

Sierra Market is located at 1532 Highway 395, Suite 8. Business hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
