Fish fry feast Friday

The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce is having a fish fry dinner this Friday evening, beginning 5 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. The cost for adults is $12 per person. There will be a lot of fun people there, so try to attend.

Walker River trout season opens

Saturday, the trout season on the Walker River begins, so plan on catching one of the really nice fish planted in the river.

Salvation Army wants to help

I recently received an e-mail on behalf of the Salvation Army. They are becoming very active in the Antelope Valley and want to help people in need in our area with housing, utilities and many other things. If you need help, you should call (877) 617-8243 and leave a message, which will be returned promptly. If you would like to volunteer to help their efforts, call Ann at (530) 495-2907.

Board of supervisors

The board held their evening meeting in Walker on April 15. They discussed several local matters including the renovation of the baseball field at the community park, their study of county facilities needing improvements, the Mountain Gate project and a possible earlier opening of West Walker River trout season in the future. It was an interesting meeting, and I wish everyone could have been there.

Mono County Spelling Bee

Our local students from Antelope Elementary and middle schools did very well in the bee, held on April 4, and we congratulate all who participated. Second place at elementary school level was Hannah Cain from Antelope, and at the middle school level, first place went to Elizabeth Pierce, with second going to Cody Clark. They will all go on to the state competition in May. Congratulations, kids. As a former spelling bee participant, I know how much work it took to be that prepared.

This and that

-- The Coleville Marlins of the Carson Valley Little League have been doing really well, winning both of their games last week. It is such a good experience for them and their families, and it's even nicer when they win.

-- The Mono County Health Nurse will be at the Walker Senior Center Tuesday, May 13, noon to 1 p.m., for any immunizations, blood pressure checks, or tests they can help with. If you need an immunization, call them at (760) 924-1830 to schedule it.
