Trout planted in West Walker River

The How Big Is Big fishing derby will run another week, until July 31. The Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce handled the planting of a lot of great fish. On July 16, they had many Alpers trout of over 5 pounds put in the West Walker River, then on July 21, there were a large number of nice-sized rainbow trout planted. All in all, the fishing has been really good. The largest fish registered at the Walker General Store for the derby is 6 pounds, 2 ounces. There is still time to go out there and win one of the nice prizes offered.

Great charity fundraiser

The Antelope Valley Relay for Life team's fundraising car wash last Saturday was a great success. Their volunteers worked so hard, even through the warm weather. Not only was it great that the local residents supported their effort, but the people driving along the highway were stopping and getting their cars washed.

The event raised $600 as a contribution to the American Cancer Society on behalf of our local team. The team thanks all who came and supported their cause.

This and that

If you are at all interested in adopting a child, the Mono County Department of Social Services has a goal of keeping local children in our county. They will have an orientation presentation this Saturday in Mammoth Lakes, for people who are interested in becoming adoptive parents.

Call Kathy Watkins at (760) 924-1793 for details and location.

-- The Walker Thrift Store is looking good, with many great items for sale at ridiculously low prices. They are located across from the Walker Community Park at 399 Mule Deer Road. They would also love to have people to volunteer a few hours a week to help at the store. Contact them at (530) 495-1200 for information.

-- Remember the 60th anniversary day at the park with the Antelope Valley Fire Department August 4.

There will be a barbecue, all the firefighting equipment to look at, and pictures from the past 60 years to enjoy. It is a great chance to meet these hard-working volunteers in our area, get to know them, and thank them for all they do for us.

-- We have always had hummingbird feeders on our deck and enjoyed watching them, but this year it seems that there are so many more than before. It is a ball just watching them come nonstop all day. They start at first light in the morning and keep on coming. Sometimes there will be three or four of them, and then they bicker over whose feeder it is. They have made summer on the deck really fun.
