After finishing in a three-way tie for second place in the Sun Belt Conference and then losing two of three in the conference tournament, the Troy University Trojan baseball team was fairly sure its season was over.
But thanks in part to their league ranking No. 6 and the Trojans pulling a No. 30 RPI nationally, Troy received an invite to the NCAA regionals Monday morning.
Douglas High graduate Bryan Miller, who went to the National Junior College World Series last year with Mesa College, has been a regular in the outfield this season with the Trojans.
He is sixth on the team in batting average with a .317 clip, having started 32 games and played in 50 this season. He drove in 22 runs with eight doubles, one triple and two home runs and stole two bases.
Troy (34-25) enters as the No. 3 seed in its region and will face No. 2-seed Southern Mississippi Friday afternoon. The Trojans are also bracketed with top-seeded Ole Miss and No. 4 Sam Houston State.
Elsewhere on the national stage, Douglas High grad Chad Walling scored a run in Western Nevada Community College's 2-0 win over Delgado in the first round of the National Junior College World Series over the weekend. The Wildcats upset No. 1 New Mexico Junior College on Monday in Grand Junction, Colo.
