The Gardnerville Elementary School PTSO would like to thank everyone who supported our seventh annual Charity Basket Raffle and Ice Cream Social. Each class created a basket to be raffled off with all the proceeds going to a charity. There were 27 baskets and 17 different charities represented. The basket raffle raised $3,630 for these charities. Special thanks go to all the students and parents who donated items for the baskets. This spectacular event would not have been possible without them. Cougar Leadership sponsored the Ice Cream Social and our art teacher, Shannon Sedlock, had beautiful displays of the students' artwork throughout the school. This was a wonderful way to end our 2006-2007 school year.

The Carson Valley Community Food Closet would like to thank all the people who so generously donated to the Letter Carriers' Food Drive on May 12. Three times more food was collected for those in need than during the previous letter carrier's drive. Bags were placed in mailboxes on Friday to be filled and left by the mailboxes the next day. And filled they were. The postal service workers then picked up the bags of food and delivered it to the food closet. In the Gardnerville Ranchos they collected 4,807 pounds. In Gardnerville they collected 4,045 pounds. And in Minden they collected 6,518 pounds. This is a total of 15,370 pounds from the Valley. The food will be distributed among the many families in the Carson Valley who are not able to afford groceries on their own. Thank you to all who gave so that there will be "no empty tummies."

A special thanks to all the letter carriers who helped with this food drive. It wouldn't have been so successful without them. Two of the Minden post office employees even went above and beyond by volunteering their own vehicle and time in order to help the food closet receive all the groceries and stock the shelves.

Again - thank you, thank you, thank you.

The Carson Valley Food Closet would like to send thanks to all who donated during the month of April. There continues to be a need and people of our community are helping to fill it.

Those who helped with food donations in April (in pounds): Kiwanis (30), Mr. and Mrs. Salinas (35), Ralston Purina (520 Ð cereal), Valley Cruisers (627), Christ Presbyterian Church ( 38), Curves Ð Gardnerville/Minden (402), M. Smith (145), St. Gall Catholic Church (564), Leadership Douglas County (35), Douglas County Library "Food for Fines" (821), Scolari's (cake for the volunteer dinner), Donna Silva (70), Stewart and Cindy Hill (100), GE Energy (618), Claudia (20), Mary Poell ( 28) Carson Valley United Methodist Church (100), Sertoma Club (32). Regular grocery contributors were: Scolari's, Raley's, Smith's, Starbucks, Trader Joe's, Costco, Russell Mercantile, Sugar Plum Bakery and Pony Espresso.

The following establishments have graciously agreed to sell ducks for the Wacky Waddlers Wiver Wace to benefit the food closet: Stewart Title - 1663 Highway 395, Minden; Scolari's - 1329 Highway 395, Gardnerville; Remax - 1480 Highway 395, Gardnerville; Candles and Crafts - 1540 Highway 395, Gardnerville; Taylor-York Salon - 1662 Highway 395, Minden. Ducks are $5 each and all proceeds go to the food closet.

The food closet is located at 1255 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville. Donations can be dropped off Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday, 1-4 p.m. For more information you can contact director Eileen Boettiger or assistant director Donna Kurtz at 782-3711.

Smallwood Foundation and FSC connection

The Family Support Council would like to thank the Smallwood Foundation for all of their many years of support.

This year the Family Support Council celebrates their 25th year in serving the community of Douglas County. The mission of the Family Support Council is to promote individual and family dignity and respect by means of education, prevention and intervention; thereby ensuring that all members of our community have the opportunity to live their lives free of family violence.

The Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation was established in 1968 following the death of William P. Smallwood. The establishment of the foundation represented the culmination of Mr. and Mrs. Smallwood's lifetime support of a broad spectrum of charitable organizations and endeavors.

The connection between the Smallwood Foundation and the Family Support Council is a great one. Foundation chairman, Suzanne Stockdale, is pleased to award the Family Support Council $39,008 for the 2007-2008 fiscal year for general operating support. The foundation has given the Family Support Council over $323,362 since 1998. The continued strong, long-term relationship between the two businesses has allowed the Family Support Council to make a huge difference in so many ways in Douglas County.

The funding from the Smallwood Foundation over the years has allowed the Family Support Council to offer more classes to the community and serve many more families. The money from the Smallwood Foundation has been used in many areas including offering classes such as Parenting Young Children (ages 0-5), Effective Parenting (ages 6-12) and Surviving your Teen (ages 13-18) free of charge. Funding has also been provided to offer a "Child Abuse Prevention Open House" during the last several years.

With the combined strength and longevity of the Family Support Council and the consistent support and belief from the Smallwood Foundation the Council will continue to grow and play an integral part in the continued effort to build a strong healthier community.
