Valley's farewell to Connie Wennhold today

The celebration of life for Connie Wennhold is 2:30 p.m. today at Carson Valley United Methodist Church.

When we were gathering information for the story about Connie's death last week, I talked to two people who worked closely with her.

Fellow school board member Sharla Hales, who flew to Alaska to look after her injured sister on March 15, said her favorite memory of Connie was at Aaron Wennhold's Eagle Scout ceremony.

"She loved scouting, loved her country and mostly she loved her family," Sharla said. "One of my favorite memories of her was watching her pride and satisfaction in her son's achievement."

Former Douglas County Superintendent and longtime teacher John Soderman described Connie as a great mother and family person.

"She was always really proud of her boys," he said. "It's nice to see it and have it show. She decided to step up and provide a service to the community, including taking a leadership role. As a citizen she looked beyond herself and made a contribution to her community."

I saw Connie and George at the Costco a few weeks ago. The first two words of the last sentence she said to me were "Thank you."

I learned Tuesday that the University of Nevada, Reno, literary magazine, "Brushfire" is being co-edited by Ashley Noel Hennefer and Sarah King.

Both young women are Douglas High School graduates pursuing journalism degrees and have worked at The Record-Courier at some point over the past few years.

Sarah was our part-time photographer and Ashley interned for the newspaper for two years while she was in high school.

Ashley told me she and Sarah were surprised to learn they would be co-editors. She said they are enjoying the work, so far.
