A new device installed on Douglas County K-9 units will prevent a repeat of the tragic death of Jon-Jon, which occurred in February.

The K9 Hot-n-Pop Pro developed by a Florida firm, Ace K9, will sound the horn, flash the lights and drop the windows of a patrol car should an emergency occur.

"The new system is built specifically to prevent what we had happen," Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Joe Duffy said.

A demonstration will be conducted at an event 10 a.m. Oct. 7 in Lampe Park.

A road hazard at Holbrook Junction turned out to be a dead cow. There is no report of what killed the cow, but motorists are warned to watch out for livestock on Highway 395 south of Gardnerville.

A potluck to say farewell to Genoa Town Manager Tom Peters is 6 p.m. tonight at the Town Hall. Peters resigned his post after seven months due to conflicts with some members of the town board.

It will be nice today, but the wind will pick up over the weekend bringing with it a cold front that could result in precipitation by the middle of next week.

The high today is predicted to hit 89 degrees and the low will be 39. Winds on Saturday will gust to 26 mph and the high will only make 82.

The National Weather Service is predicting that by Thursday, there will be a 30 percent chance of rain showers.
