Douglas County commissioners will discuss hiring an architect to build the Minden parking garage. Cost estimates for the garage have hit $7.8 million.

Commissioners are meeting 1:30 p.m. today at the Douglas County Adminitrative Offices in Stateline.

Also on today's agenda is the passing of the public defender's torch from Terri Roeser, who is retiring, to Derrick Lopez. Lopez, who has been both defense attorney and prosecutor will cross the aisle once more.

High winds on Tuesday are being blamed for an elm tree branch hitting a power line and knocking power out to nearly 3,000 Sierra Pacific Power Co. customers.

Karl Walquist said the outage occurred at 8:54 a.m. and lasted until 9:30 a.m. It affected Sierra Pacific customers in the Gardnerville Ranchos, Markleeville and Woodfords.

Winds are predicted to gust up to30 mph today.

A Smith Valley woman was killed 5 p.m. Tuesday on Lower Colony Road after she lost control of her 2000 Jeep.

Tina Park, 42, was driving south at what the Nevada Highway Patrol characterizes as a high rate of speed when she lost control and rolled the vehicle.

Park was pronounced dead at the scene.
