Soccer: McQueen girls top Douglas

The No. 6 Douglas girls' soccer team ran into a tough McQueen squad Tuesday, losing 4-1 on the road.

Douglas struggled to find a rhythm in the first half but picked things up in the second half, getting a goal from Meghan Emerson.

Lisa Christen had the assist on the Emerson goal.

Goalie Jamie Greer had six saves and Krista Anderson was able to match McQueen's style of physical play well.

"We're still facing some growing pains," coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "Once we settled down in the second half, we got that goal, which was good."

Douglas dropped to 2-2-1 on the year.

The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 6 in the current Sierra Nevada Sports Media Poll and will take on rival Carson this weekend at home.

The Lady Tiger junior varsity squad, however, improved to 2-0 on the year with a 9-0 win over the Lancers.

Ashley Hill scored just two minutes into the game with a left-foot linedrive.

Michelle Gibbons scored a few minutes later with a hard ground shot. Hill later connected for two more goals.

Sarah Owens scored with only seconds left in the first half with an assist from CJ Baumgartner on a long crossing pass, giving the Tigers a 5-0 halftime lead.

The scoring deluge continued in the second half with four different players scoring: Shelby Eisele, Amanda Ferraro, Becca Neuffer and Nicole Duster.

The defense was stellar throughout the game with Sage Lyons, Samantha Ensminger, Clara Ritger and Eisele covering the back line and stopping all attacks.
