Local artist's work highlighted at reception in Genoa gallery

The Davis Gallery in Genoa will host an artist reception and one-man show for local artist Greg Drinkwine opening with an artist reception from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 15. More than 20 of Drinkwine's newest works will be on display. The event will be fully catered with fine foods and champagne as well as music.

Nationally known, Drinkwine is an artist, teacher, business owner, master frame maker and muralist, each in its own right a field of great accomplishment, but for the Gardnerville resident, Drinkwine handles each as a vocation that he holds at a professional level.

His artworks are of the American realist style, in both plein-air landscape and figurative genres. His art education began in the mid-1980s at the prestigious Art Student's League in New York City, where he received the Nancy Galentiere Award and was elected as a member of the league. He also lived in France for a year at the Ecole Albert Defois. His studies continued at the Loveland Academy in Colorado through the late 1990s.

Drinkwine is also a credentialed fine art teacher. He has conducted workshops in the open air, at his studio in Gardnerville and as an adjunct professor at Tahoe Community College. He actually owns two businesses at the moment-Craftsman Frame Company and co-owner of The Davis Gallery in Genoa.

As Craftsman Frame Company, he is the maker of world-class hand-carved gold leaf frames in the style of 19th and early 20th century designs of the arts and crafts period. He is a framer for the renowned Coeur D'Alene art auction that takes place in Reno each year.

"The frames are all custom-sized and hand-carved from hardwood," Drinkwine said. "We use century-old techniques to create some of the finest frames available anywhere in the world."

As if all these talents and activities weren't enough, Drinkwine is also a fantastic muralist, receiving his training in France. He specializes in reproductions of old master works and has created some of his most important murals in Carson Valley.

As part owner of the only gallery in the Carson-Tahoe area that deals exclusively in original works of fine art - The Davis Gallery in Genoa, located at 2285 Main St., is located right next to the tasting room of the prestigious Tahoe Ridge Winery - Drinkwine participates in the gallery exhibits and gives demonstrations for the enjoyment of the art world.

The gallery opened in 2004 and represents 11 nationally known artists in addition to Drinkwine himself. The gallery specializes in realistic styles of artwork, featuring landscapes, still life and figurative pieces.

The Davis Gallery, co-owned by Gayle and Cynthia Davis, is a member of the newly formed Carson Valley Art Gallery Association, a unified group of the seven organized galleries in the Carson Valley. The association was organized to establish the Carson Valley as an art destination, showcasing the best the Carson Valley art community has to offer and extend the art offerings to the world beyond.
