Girls' soccer: Lady Tigers shut out Mustangs

The Douglas girls' soccer team remained unbeaten at home on the season, taking a 5-0 win over Damonte Ranch and avenging a loss earlier in the season to the Mustangs.

"We were just a little flat in that first game," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "Saturday we played very well and had great results. Coming off the loss to Carson, the girls' rebounded and managed to play really well as a team."

The Tigers have not lost at home in more than a year, since a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Carson on Oct. 4 of last year.

Saturday, Morgan LeFever scored the 42nd and 43rd goals of her career and also recorded her 24th assist. She remained fifth all-time for goals in a career in the Northern 4A behind Julia Spaulding (55), Christina Bradshaw (53), Michelle Shearer (50) and Hannah Sullivan (47), all of whom are former Douglas Tigers.

She moved into ninth in the overall state record books.

Michelle Day scored an unassisted goal, her third of the season, to open the scoring Saturday.

Katie Nalder scored her fourth of the year and Meghan Emerson punched in her third. Rachel Van Roy also had an assist.

Jamie Greer posted her third shutout of the season.

Douglas greatly helped itself in the playoff picture with the win, jumping up to 6-5-3 overall and 4-3-2 in league play. A loss or a tie would've placed the Tigers in a rather large hole to dig out of.

"We got ourselves back in the playoff picture with this win," Fitzhugh said. "We're playing well to start out the second half of the year and we're really turning the corner as a team."

Douglas was scheduled to host North Valleys Tuesday afternoon. The results of that game will be in the Friday edition of The R-C.
