Girls' Soccer: Douglas gets past Galena 3-1

The Douglas High girls' soccer team avenged its only loss of the season Tuesday night, defeating Galena 3-1 in Minden.

The Tigers got goals from Katie Dry, Alex Laing and Jessica Vega in the win.

"We'll take that win," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "Everyone played tonight and that's the goal, just to make everyone strong and keep going at them as a total unit."

The Tigers got on the board toward the end of the first half when Katie Dry took a crossing pass and dribbled past three Galena defenders before putting the ball nicely past the keeper in the 39th minute.

With the start of the second half, Douglas focused an aggressive attack on the Galena net and saw immediate dividends.

Dry dribbled the ball down the right wing and looped what was supposed to be a crossing pass in front of the net but got past Galena's keeper. A Galena defender attempted to clear the ball away but it traveled straight to the feet of Jessica Vega, who one-timed the ball for a nice goal in the 41st minute.

"It's hard to continue connecting the ball on this field," Fitzhugh said. "At times the ball got away from us, but that can happen to anyone. Overall, I'm really happy with the different types of generations we did. We nice crosses, drops and splits, just generating our outside shots.

"I was glad to see us get some of those off."

Douglas added its final goal in the 73rd minute when Nicole Duster crossed the ball for Alex Laing, who punched it to the far upper corner for her 12th goal of the year.

Galena added a goal in the 76th minute on a ball that had gotten loose in front of the Tiger net, but Douglas played shut down defense for the remainder to seal the win.
