Lions Club barbecue coming Saturday

Don't forget that Saturday is this annual Lions Club Deer Hunters Barbecue fundraising event, with the deep pit barbecued meat and the rest of the trimmings. The fun will start 5 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. Also, don't forget to plan for raffle tickets to try for some of their great prizes. Dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children. I'm getting hungry already.

Fire Department notes

n Chief Ray Tems has asked me to remind everyone that we are fast approaching the fireplace and wood stove burning time of year. He strongly recommends that you have your chimney and/or fireplace inspected and cleaned before the burning season starts.

n Sept. 23, the Volunteer Fire Department did a trash cleanup along Highway 395 from the edge of Walker to Larson Lane as part of their highway adoption program. It's really nice and clean along the sides of the road now.

n Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 9-14. There will be a bonfire pep rally 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Coleville High School, which the fire department will be attending. Then, at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 there will be a fire drill and school assembly. The department will attend, bringing a "burn trailer" from Douglas County's East Fork Fire and Paramedic District. This trailer will simulate the occurrence of fire in a home. This will be a great education for the students and anyone else there.

Flu shots available

From noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Walker Senior Center, the Mono County Health Department will be offering flu and pneumonia shots. It's a great way to get these important vaccinations for a reasonable price and close to home.

Walker Fall Festival

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both Oct. 14 and 15, the festival will be in full swing on Highway 395 in Walker. There will be so much to do, and great raffle prizes there for the winning. The now-famous duck races will be at noon on Sunday, so be sure to have your ducks ready. The cost to adopt a racing duck is $5 each or a "6-Quack" for $25.

This and that

n Noon today is the time set for a meeting at the Walker Senior Center between Mono County Sheriff/Coroner's Office, County Health Department, Brune & Buck Mortuary from Bishop and local residents. The discussion will center around the County's contract with the Bishop mortuary to deal with those who pass away anywhere in Mono County. Since this affects us all, no matter our age, it might be worthwhile to find out how this contract affects you in the case of a family death, and if any changes are possible to get help closer to our community than Bishop.

n Medicare Part D will be the topic 12:15 tomorrow at the Walker Senior Center. Find out from an expert source how to understand and deal with this program.

n The Antelope Valley Women's Club has space for a few more vendors/crafters for booths at their bazaar on Nov. 12 at the Walker Community Center. Call Anne at (530) 495-2603 for information.

n The Antelope Valley Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization had a fundraising barbecue, treasure hunt and a volleyball game at the Walker Community Park on Sept. 30. I stopped for a minute, and it sure looked like the many people there (both adults and children) were having a great time.

n Sept. 30 the high school football and volleyball teams played Smith Valley in Coleville. The football team didn't fare well against their big rival, but the volleyball girls pulled out a hard-fought victory.

n Please be sure to let me know upcoming events that matter to our area. I need to know the information by the weekend before the Wednesday issue to let everyone know what's going on.
