Carson Valley green was lucky for a Japanese glider pilot, who survived a collision with an executive jet at 16,000 feet and was able to safely bail out landing in the Pine Nuts.

The collision occurred at about 3 p.m. on Monday when one of the glider's wing tips struck the front of the jet.

The pilot of the jet received minor injuries, but was able to land safely at Carson City Airport.

The news looked bad for the glider pilot, until about 6 p.m. when searchers came across a parachute and empty harness. He was found a short time later, ambulatory and relatively uninjured.

Congressional hopeful Sharron Angle is challenging the Aug. 15 primary in district court, hoping for a do-over.

Angle lost the race by 426 votes to moderate Republican Dean Heller. She claims voting irregularities in Washoe County disenfranchised voters.

It is the Angle camp's contention that voters were discouraged by long lines at the polls, making Washoe County the Ohio of this year's election.

Northbound traffic was backed up, but otherwise there were no incidents at the roundabout at Highway 88 and County Road on the first day of school Monday.

The traffic device did its job, calming traffic to a standstill in some cases, but allowing motorists on County Road and Mahogany easy access.

A red flag fire warning is in effect starting at noon today and running until 9 p.m.

High winds and low humidity will conspire with tinder dry vegetation to make for hazardous conditions.

"Remember, only you can prevent forest fires," said U.S. Forest Service spokes icon Smokey Bear.

The high today will be in the upper 80s and the low in the 40s.
