Nevada baseball rolls past Portland

Travis Sutton turned in his second straight impressive effort as the University of Nevada baseball team had no trouble in beating Portland in a 16-2 win on Thursday at the Oakland A's Tournament in Phoenix.

Freshman Owen Brolsma of Carson High also made his collegiate debut, pitching one scoreless inning while allowing one hit and striking out one.

Sutton (2-0) allowed two runs on six hits through seven innings. He had plenty of support as the Wolf Pack (3-1) scored six runs, all after there were two outs, on their way to taking a 9-0 lead.

In the first, Brian Gazerro singled and after Robert Marcial's sacrifice bunt, scored on Ben Mummy's double. After Jacob Butler walked, Chris Gimenez followed with a two-run double. Erick Streelman then hit an RBI single and Bub Madrid belted a two-run home run.

In the second, Marcial singled and scored on Mummy's single. Butler's RBI single then made it 8-0. In the fourth, Marcial doubled and scored on Mummy's single to make it 9-0.

Nevada scored three runs in the fifth when Gimenez singled, Streelman walked and Madrid belted a two-run triple. Madrid eventually scored on an error.

In the sixth, Gimenez belted a homer. The Wolf Pack scored three more runs in the seventh to finish the scoring. Gabe Mayorga singled and scored on Derek McNeil's triple. McNeil eventually scored on a wild pitch and Butler had an RBI sacrifice fly.

Mummy continued his hot hitting. After going 7-for-14 last weekend, he went 3-for-4 on Thursday and is now 10-for-18 on the year. Gimenez went 4-for-4 with three RBI, Marcial went 3-for-4 and Madrid had two hits and four RBI.

After Brolsma pitched a scoreless eighth, Matt Renfree finished up, pitching a scoreless ninth. Carson High graduate Joe Mercer went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter. Nevada continues play in the tournament at 7 p.m. today against Missouri.
