Nevada baseball wins season opener

The University of Nevada baseball team received an encouraging effort from Travis Sutton as it opened the season with an 8-4 win over St. Mary's on Friday at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton.

Sutton pitched seven strong innings and was supported by Ben Mummy and Brett Hayes, who each hit two-run home runs. Sutton allowed three runs on five hits for the win.

Nevada wasted a golden chance in the third inning when it loaded the bases with no outs, but failed to score. The Wolf Pack trailed 1-0 in the fifth when Hayes belted a two-run homer to give Nevada a 2-1 lead.

Nevada took control of the game when it scored four runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. In the seventh, Brian Gazerro and Chris Gimenez walked and Mummy followed with an RBI single. Mummy and Gimenez then pulled off a double steal with Mummy stealing second and Gimenez stealing home.

Gabe Mayorga followed with an RBI single and after Erick Streelman and Bub Madrid walked, Robert Marcial hit an RBI single. In the eighth, Jacob Butler doubled and Mummy belted his two-run homer.

Mummy had two hits and three RBI and Marcial went 3-for-4. Galena redshirt freshman Brandon Evans finished up for Nevada. The left-handed pitcher allowed one run on two hits over two innings. Carson High graduate Joe Mercer was used as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1.
