New sign shop opens

Carson City graphic designer and sign-maker Josh Buscay is riding on the coattails of the locally famous C Hill flag with his new business.

The 20-year-old entrepreneur designed the 120- by 67-foot flag that has overlooked Carson City since October, and with his new venture, Sign Designs, he hopes to add more of his work to the capital landscape.

"I decided I want to go out on my own and have a little flexibility," Buscay said Tuesday from his office at 3170 Deer Run Road, No. 8. After less than two weeks, he has already had a few jobs.

"I do a little bit of everything: I make signs and I do graphic design; wood signs, acrylic, car magnetics, stickers, decals, windshield brows. Basically, anybody who wants a sign, I will do it for them."

Buscay said he specializes in youth-oriented graphics, the types of things that passers-by see on small touring cars the latest rage in hot-rodding. He also has the equipment to build vinyl signs for any occasion. His operation is digital, so everything is computer driven.

"Right now I am depending on a lot of sales calls, advertising and a lot of word of mouth," he said. "I'm learning that your days fill up pretty quickly, but it has been what I expected."

Although his office hours are not set, he said he is in most of the week, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. He can be reached at 882-7446.

As a business person in a small town, Buscay is joining his mother, Sarah Buscay, who owns Sarah's Upholstery, an automotive and furniture upholstery specialty shop.

She says, assurringly, her son's work is top-notch, drawing on his former experience working for another local sign shop.

"He did a great job working on my friend's PT Cruiser," she said.

Part of Buscay's startup cost was the purchase of a large plotter used to put graphics on vinyl signs.
