Equine courses offered Jan. 25

A new accredited equine course is being offered for the spring 2000 semester beginning Jan. 25 and titled Horsemanship Skills.

The class is a comprehensive course designed for the beginning/novice horse owner. It can also serve as an informative refresher course for those who are more experienced and wish to further their equine education.

The two-credit course will cover a wide array of topics pertaining to horse ownership including horse selection and purchasing procedures, pre-purchase exams, barn and riding safety, equine insurance, fencing and horse keeping facilities, feeding and nutrition, routine veterinary care, hoof care and basic handling techniques. Three field trips are scheduled, and four guest speakers will be featured.

Laura Phelps-Bell, a trainer/instructor/clinician, will teach Horsemanship Skills. She has more than 25 years' experience in the equine industry and began operating her training stable, Starwood Farms, in 1977.

The class will meet from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 25.
