Carson Capitols open tonight

Armed with a number of returnees, the Carson Capitols baseball club will launch its 65-game summer schedule with a doubleheader tonight at Carson High School's Ron McNutt Field against El Dorado American Legion.

The two teams play two games starting at 5 p.m. and will come back on Sunday to play another doubleheader that starts at 10 a.m.

As usual, the Capitols won't be at full strength because of various end-of-the-year high school activities.

"Once we get everybody together, we have 15 or 16 guys back who were with us last year," said McNutt, who has coached the Capitols program for more than 20 years.

The Capitols roster includes four players from the Carson High squad McNutt coached this spring, including Joe Mercer, Ken Heald, Tony Faulkner and Brian Kleidosty. Joe Hooft and Billy Paganetti, both first-team all-conference players this past season at Galena, also return for the Capitols.

That nucleus will be joined by a collection of high school and college players, including Will Quaglieri (Manogue High and Purdue University), Brian Cochran (Fallon and Feather River College), Steve Henricksen (Douglas High and Modesto College).

The Capitols' summer schedule includes a trip to the Woodland (Calif.) Summer Baseball Classic on June 23-25 and a homestand in the 22nd annual Capitol Classic on July 3-9.
