Guinn makes appointments to community service commission

Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn has appointed two Las Vegas and two Reno residents to the Nevada Commission for National and Community Service.

The four new commissioners include Wells Fargo Bank Vice President of Reno Mendy Elliot; Reno environmental expert Kevin Mack; Green Valley High School student in Henderson Juan Rodriguez; and UNLV student Abigail Rojas.

Elliot, a Reno resident, oversees community and government relations for Wells Fargo in Nevada.

Mack works for the Great Basin Bird Observatory in Reno and the Nevada Wilderness Project.

Rodriguez, an honor student and a musician, is active in his community by volunteering at the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Office and with political campaigns, Rodriguez has participated in the Clark County School District Bond Campaign in 1999.

Rojas, in addition to attending UNLV, is the president of AmeriCorps at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.

The Nevada Commission was created in 1994 to select and support qualified service programs in the state for AmeriCorps funding, the national initiative which addresses critical needs by awarding scholarships to participants in exchange for community service.
