Bail was increased to $1 million cash or $2 million bond for a man accused of being drunk during a fatal head-on crash at Lake Tahoe 7 a.m. March 20.
Stephen Michael Pawlowski, 64, has been in custody since the crash on $500,000 cash bail.
Pawlowski appeared with attorney Alexandra Dyer in Tahoe Township Justice Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Chelsea Mazza filed a motion to double the bail after prosecutors learned that Pawlowski was on the verge of posting the cash bail.
Mazza argued that Pawlowski was on the verge of posting bail in the vehicular homicide in the death of 24-year-old Carson City resident Brian A. Vasquez-Gonzalez.
She pointed out that Pawlowski was prohibited from drinking alcohol by Washoe County courts on two occasions in the days before the collision, including March 17 and 18.
Mazza contended that Pawlowski posted bail with conditions on the prior cases that required him to undergo testing.
“We know he was drinking in several locations in Washoe County on March 20 before he came to Douglas,” Mazza said. “Posting bail did not save this community from losing a family member and injuring others. Nothing can be done to protect this community.”
Dyer said there were devices that could ensure Pawlowski’s sobriety should he post bail.
Justice of the Peace Michael Johnson granted Mazza’s motion and set a July 24 preliminary hearing date to give attorneys time to review the Nevada State Police’s 485-page on the wreck.
