A woman who stopped to render aid after a single vehicle crash on Interstate 580 just south of the Mount Rose Highway was killed when another motorist drove into the scene, hitting the original vehicle.

The southbound lanes of the Interstate were closed 2:30 a.m. by the collision and were reopened at 9:30 a.m. as the Nevada Highway Patrol conducts its investigation.

Snowy conditions at Lake Tahoe have chain controls over detours that use Mount Rose or Geiger Grade.

Sgt. Chris Brown said the first incident occurred around 2:15 a.m., blocking the slow travel lane.

“A Good Samaritan witnessed the crash and stopped to provide help,” he said. “During this incident a vehicle traveling southbound on IR580 entered the crash scene. This vehicle struck the originally crashed vehicle and the Good Samaritan. The Good Samaritan, an adult female, was pronounced deceased on scene by medical personal.”

Impairment is suspected of the driver of the originally crashed vehicle and the driver of the vehicle that struck the Samaritan.

Both have been arrested in connection with the collision, according to Brown.
