Douglas County Public Guardian Nicole Thomas is resigning her position effective May 2, according to Douglas County.

Thomas has served as public guardian since 2016, taking over for Claudette Springmeyer, who retired as guardian on Dec. 31, 2015.

Thomas was the first person to serve in the position after it was divided from the public administrator’s office.

County commissioners are being asked to appoint Deputy Public Guardian Kasey Myers as acting Guardian at their meeting on Wednesday.

The position opened April 22 on the county’s job web site and will close on May 22, unless a suitable candidate is found earlier.

The advertisement lists the annual salary at $95,118-$133,161.

“(The position) manages a variety of guardianship cases, assessing and determining the needs of proposed protected persons; coordinates services within a client's economic resources; verifies the assets of proposed protected persons and manages protected persons' estates,” according to the job listing.

Springmeyer served as both administrator and guardian for five years before the jobs were divided.

The contact for the public guardian’s job is Community Services Director Brooke Adie, who is also serving as interim public administrator.

There are 31 active probate cases that remain with the public administrator’s office after the sudden resignation of Steve Walsh in December.

At a March 25 court hearing, District Judge Tod Young said he wanted all of the cases filed within 30 days. Just over a week later Douglas County issued a request for qualifications for legal support services for the office. According to douglascountynv.gov, that effort wraps up 5 p.m. May 2.
