Genoa, Nev. — Conditions on Highway 50 climbing Spooner Summit are apparently pretty slick this morning with Douglas County Dispatch taking calls reporting up to five vehicle collisions due to icy conditions. Be careful driving in the mountains this morning.


The two-week filing period for judicial candidates opens today at the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer’s Office. The two justice of the peace seats are up for election for a six-year term. I’ve already received one release from someone intending to file first thing this morning.


I got my sample ballot over the weekend for the presidential preference primary to be conducted next month. On the Republican side, they’re going to caucus and that’s where folks will find former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on a ballot.


Minor modifications to the specific plan for Buckeye Farms, the Park Ranch Holdings project northeast of Minden to adjust the phasing plan go before the Gardnerville Town Board 4:30 p.m. today for the first meeting of 2024.


The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Advisory Board cancelled its meeting for today. They generally meet on the first Tuesday of the month.


Workers have been clearing the site across Santa Anita Drive from the McDonalds for a commercial center that’s previously been reported to be for Shaq’s Chicken Shack and Firehouse Subs among others. The little construction across the highway in the Ironwood Center is a coffee kiosk.


I’ve seen reports of booms shaking people’s homes, particularly in the Gardnerville Ranchos. It’s unlikely to be avalanche control at Heavenly, since they would require some snow for it to slide. It’s likely someone is shooting at some sort of explosive targets.


The National Weather Service is calling for snow after 7 p.m. tonight through Wednesday. Forecasters don’t expect it to accumulate, but it could cause slick roads during Wednesday’s commutes.


There is a slight chance we’ll see some precipitation between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. today with freezing fog in places. The forecast calls for a high today of 47 degrees and tonight’s low at 23 degrees.
