Genoa, Nev. — Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley participated in a public service announcement in the wake of what appears to be an overdose that claimed four people’s lives in a South Lake Tahoe home, including two brothers who grew up in Carson Valley. I’ve reached out to the Nevada State Police to see if I can learn the condition of a bicyclist who collided with a vehicle on Centerville Lane between Waterloo and Dresslerville around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Around three-dozen friends and family members gathered to remember the heart of Minden, Sheila Byington. Among those attending were members of the Literary Club and town patriarchs Dave Sheets, George Keele and Bruce Scott to visit with Sheila’s daughters.

Local, state and federal offices are closed today for Washington’s Birthday. That means the commute around Carson Valley will be relatively quiet, but I suspect there will be some skiers heading up Kingsbury this morning. The R-C is also closed, though you can always get ahold of us via email.

A backcountry avalanche watch is in effect through Wednesday morning, as is the winter storm warning for the Sierra. Forecasters are, however, casting some doubt on this storm lasting that long as the models show it splitting tonight.

Today’s forecast calls for showers before 10 a.m. and after 1 p.m. with the snow level above 6,000 feet. I expect what snow fell in the Valley will be gone this afternoon with a high of 49 degrees. The south wind is expected at 10-20 mph gusting to 30 mph.
