The Douglas County Historical Society announced two new exhibits, featuring items from its archival vault, that are on display under the direction of Collections Manager Brenda Cullen, until the middle of March 2024.

The changing exhibit’s corner on the main floor of the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center is showcasing newspapers printed by The Record-Courier. The exhibit features complete issues of this hometown paper from the 1950s.

Among the many happenings of the era are articles titled; “Douglas County Girls Sweep Beef and Swine Divisions at State Livestock Show in Reno;” “Fredrick H Dressler Will Receive Honor Award at University’s Commencement;” “Lutheran Church Observes 60th Anniversary;” and “Douglas County Taxes Reported Lowest in Nevada.”

In addition to the local news, the viewer will see   advertisements for Gardnerville Food Store, featuring Del Monte Catsup (2 for 37 cents), Bisquick (40 oz pkg 39 cents) and Pure Strawberry Preserves (39 cents), and the Minden Dry Goods advertising a Samsonite Train Case for $17.50.  More ads for household items can be seen. Two vintage Underwood typewriters and Vintage Cameras complete the exhibit.

The R-C and its progenitors have covered Douglas County since 1875. When the newspaper moved to Minden from its offices in Gardnerville, it transferred many of its oldest bound volumes to the Douglas County Historical Society for safekeeping. The oldest volumes date back to the end of the 19th Century.

In the Community Exhibit Case, next to the Society’s office, is an added display of several vintage movie cameras and cameras with flash bulb attachments, also part of the society’s collections.

The Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Main St., Gardnerville, is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
