Genoa, Nev. — Workers will be closing off a few hundred feet of one lane of Highway 395 between First Street and Waterloo Lane to conduct sidewalk, curb, gutter and drainage work starting today.

While the closures are expected to be short, anything that gets in the way of downtown traffic tends to create backups through Gardnerville.

A man who admitted tying to carjack a woman in Gardnerville on May 30 is scheduled to be sentenced today. Derek Melendez faces up to 36 years in prison with the deadly weapon enhancement. He is also facing federal prosecution in the shooting death of Eric Wyatt Jr. in Dresslerville.

Power went out at 6:45 p.m. Sunday for around 90 minutes. The cause was listed as an animal coming into contact with the lines.

A person who has been dead for awhile was reportedly found around 5 p.m. on Saturday related to one of the RVs parked in the lot off Topsy Lane. No cause, but also no sign of foul play that I could tell.

A storm system is expected to bring rain to Northern California and Southern Oregon, helping to douse the big fires up north. A red flag warning is in effect 1-8 p.m. today for northern Washoe and Lassen counties.

The Quarry fire is still actively burning near Strawberry and is officially up to 1,500 acres, according to the Fire Information for Resource Management System. The mapping tool on the site shows it at over 2,000 acres.

Drift smoke from the fire is forecast to increase in Carson Valley 8-10 p.m. tonight as the south wind picks up to 10-15 mph, gusting to 25 mph. Otherwise expect mostly sunny skies and a high near 78 degrees.
