Genoa, Nev. — Gardnerville takes the lead this Fourth of July with its Freedom 5K. In-person registration begins at 7 a.m. with the start a 8 a.m. at Heritage Park.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse is scheduled to make a memorial ride from Minden Park down County Road starting at 9 a.m. today.

Genoa and Minden start their Fourth celebrations at pretty close to the same time around 10 a.m. Minden starts their kids bike race at 10:30 a.m. and the music starts in Genoa around 11:15 a.m.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra starts at 11:30 a.m. and wraps up after lunch, when many of its members take the trip to Genoa to perform with the Carson City Symphony in Mormon Station State Historic Park at 3:45 p.m.

There were a lot of issues at Tahoe on Monday both on land and at sea, including an oversized load trying to get through Cave Rock, a disabled bus on Kingsbury, a collision at Zephyr Cove, a boat crash off Nevada Beach and an unwelcome moorer, tied up after his boat engine quit off Cave Rock.

Fireworks go off at Stateline the same time they go off at Carson City, Virginia City and Reno-Sparks, when it gets dark enough to see them, which should be around 9:30 p.m.

If you’re headed up to Lights on the Lake, get up there early, because it will be packed. The Carson fireworks at pretty accessible from all angles for those of us who’d like to dodge the throng.

It felt hot on Monday, but Minden-Tahoe Airport topped out at 91 degrees so it might have been me. Today’s forecast is for sunny skies and a high near 92 degrees with the wind out of the west at 10-15 mph tonight, dying down around midnight.
