Stormy weather brings snow to upper elevations

Alpine County rescuers responded to a spinout on Highway 88 near Caples Lake Dam at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The Jeep Wagoneer’s airbag deployed, but there was no report of injury, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Chains were required for all vehicles except those with four-wheel drive and snow tires over the Sierra on highways 88, 89 and 50.

Both Monitor and Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County are closed, according to the CHP.

Chain controls are in effect on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe as snow fell on Kingsbury as the second half of a storm arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

Rain fell for the second day in a row in Minden, which received .41 inches on Monday. Glenbrook reported .43 inches over the 24 hours up to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Snow telemetry at Heavenly Valley reported 2 inches of snow fell overnight with .6 inches of precipitation falling by lunchtime Tuesday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Reno expect rain and high elevation snow through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

There’s a possibility that snow levels may dip to the Valley floor on Saturday morning.

Shower activity is expected to become spotty the rest of this evening, according to the Weather Service.

Christmas day is expected to be dry and chilly on Monday before another storm arrives on Wednesday that will tend to provide more precipitation in the Sierra through Mono and Alpine counties.

Forecasters said the last week of 2023 could be active with temperatures warming up by the end of the year.
