Horses headline on Kentucky Derby day

With the most famous horse race in the world taking place today, there are two horse-related events occurring in Carson Valley.

A Kentucky Derby party to benefit nonprofit Healing Arenas is 2 p.m. in Gardnerville.

Hosted at Circle S Western Market, 1506 Main St., tickets for the fundraiser are $30.

Healing Arena’s Julie Baker said that the event will have a full bar featuring mint juleps and finger foods.

“We’re having a small raffle, but even more fun is learning to bet horseracing (via www.tvg.com) on our cellphones, and a derby hat contest for both men and women,” Baker said.

Post time for the 148th annual Derby is 3:45 p.m.
