Registration is open for Carson Valley’s annual winter celebration of all things avian and agriculture.

Eagles and Agriculture is Jan. 26-29 and offers a variety of tours of Carson Valley ranches and bird spots, in addition to a reception, dinner and a photo workshop.

For those seeking an early taste of birding and agriculture, the River Fork Ranch Preserve in Genoa is hosting the annual Christmas Bird Count 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 31.

Sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, Lahontan Audubon Society, the Washoe Tribe, the bird count is one of the longest running citizen scientist projects in the United States.

Eagles & Ag 2023 Schedule

Tours & Event Details:

Jan. 26 - Opening Reception & Photography Exhibit: $30 per person - From 5:30-7:30 p.m. Features the work of area wildlife photographers and there is an expected visit from several falconers and their birds for up close viewing. Have a glass of wine and an hors d’oeuvres or two while you meet fellow enthusiasts.

Jan. 27 – Wetlands Tour: $85 per person - Tour time is 8-11 a.m. (Attendees need to arrive at 7:30am for check-in). There are a number of wetland treasures in the Carson Valley featuring large numbers of waterfowl and migrant birds. A short hike on level ground is part of this tour. As in all the tours, spotting scopes, binoculars and/or cameras are recommended.

Jan. 27 – Guided Hike of the Local Area: $45 per person- Tour time is 1:30-4:30 p.m. Guides will lead a hike of local trails along the Carson River to view habitat of deer, beaver, ducks, geese, fish, pond turtles and all sorts of bird types. An easy hike of a few miles.

Jan. 27 – Eagles & Agriculture Falconers’ Dinner: $85 per person - From 5:30-8:30 p.m. Organizers are finalizing the Ag
speaker and a number of area falconers and their birds are scheduled to join us as well. The Carson Valley Photo Club will have their work on display along with a raffle. This event will be hosted at the CVIC Hall indowntown Minden.

Jan. 28 – Eagle/Ranch Tour: $105 per person - Tour time is approximately 8-11:30 a.m. (Attendees need to arrive at 7:30 a.m. for check-in). A “behind the scenes” look at area ranches. Learn about Carson Valley ranching, conservation and have an opportunity to view/photograph eagles, hawks, owls and other birds of prey. The tour concludes with lunch and a historic presentation at the Carson Valley Inn. Eagle/Ranch Tour leaves from the Carson Valley Inn.

Jan. 28 – Owl Prowl & Historic Barn Tour: $85 per person - Tour time is 1 p.m. to dusk (Attendees need to arrive at 12:30 p.m. for check-in). Visit historic barns on area ranches and view owl habitat. Weather permitting, a falconer will provide a demonstration of the sport of falconry. Owl Prowl & Historic Barn Tour leaves from the Carson Valley Inn.

Jan. 28-29 – Photo Workshop: $125 per person Saturday evening classroom seminar taught by long-time Northern Nevada instructor Craig Moore from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the CVIC Hall; and 7-10 a.m. Sunday outdoors in Carson Valley under the tutelage of Carson Valley wildlife photographer John Humphrey. 

Jan. 29 – Raptor Highway and Byway Tour: $85 per person - Tour time is 8-11:30 a.m. (Attendees need to arrive at 7:30 a.m. for check-in). This tour has been moved to Sunday morning this year to take advantage of better lighting for photography, more raptor opportunities and less traffic congestion. Supplemental tour for those interested in the Buteos, Accipiters, Falcons and other birds which commonly winter in Carson Valley. As in all the tours, spotting scopes, binoculars and/or cameras are recommended.
