Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has named its scholarship after Tom Stone.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has elected to name its annual scholarship after former President Tom Stone, who died unexpectedly on July 4.

“Because of his passionate support of our men and women in Law Enforcement, our First Responders and Veterans, the Sheriff’s Posse has elected to rename their general scholarship fund in Tom’s honor,” organizers said. “He loved his country and those who do the work to make and keep it great.”

The son of a World War II Air Force B-24 mechanic, Stone was the first member of his family to earn a college degree. Working nights, attending school during the day and raising a family made scholarship assistance a necessity.

“Tom clearly understood and sympathized with the needs of today’s students. His core beliefs of integrity, humility, work ethic and service to others are fundamental to the Posse’s selection of scholarship recipients.”

The DCSMP Tom Stone Freedom Riders Memorial Scholarship is open to students seeking degrees in law enforcement, first responder studies (fire science, paramedic training) nursing, animal sciences, or agriculture. Applications may be found online at Douglas High School website https://dhs.dcsd.net.
