Spring forward this weekend

It’s that time again: remember to move clocks ahead one hour this Saturday night before hitting the hay: Daylight Saving Time officially begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14.

DST starts the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November. This year, we’ll “fall back” to Standard Time on Nov. 7.

When our sons were babies, I remember thinking, “Whoever started DST must not have had small children,” because of the toll this shift took on their sleep schedule. Now the boys are older and I find it’s me who seems to have the greatest challenge in adjusting to the change. It always takes me awhile to settle in to this “new” time and while I don’t look forward to the transition, I do enjoy the extended evening light it brings.

Children invited to join the Cover to Cover Club

The Douglas County Public Library and In-N-Out Burger have teamed to offer the “Cover to Cover Club” reading program once again.

Through April 17, children ages 4-12 are invited to stop by either the Minden or Lake Tahoe library and pick up a reading log. For every five books read, participants earn a certificate for a free hamburger, and readers are eligible to earn up to three awards. Children too young to read on their own may have a parent read to them.

The DCPL Minden branch is located at 1625 Library Lane. Hours are Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Mondays and Fridays are curbside service only. The DCPL Lake Tahoe branch is located at 233 Warrior Way, with hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

For information, log onto douglas.lib.nv.us, check their Facebook page at facebook.com/DouglasLibraryNV/, or call (775) 782-9841.

Elks offer fish fry March 12

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks host “Dash and Dine Date Night for Two” Friday night, featuring a menu of fish and chips (or onion rings) and coleslaw.

Each takeout meal provides enough for two servings and is prepared by Elks members. Donation is $25, and reservations for Friday night’s meal must be made by 4:30 p.m. today.

To place an order, call the Lodge at 775-265-5483 and leave a message with your name, phone number, how many dinners for two you’d like, preference for chips (fries) or onion rings, and the time between 5-7 p.m. you plan to pick up the food.

The Tahoe/Douglas Elks lodge is located at 1227 Kimmerling Road in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Proceeds from Elks’ events benefit programs for seniors, veterans, and youth in the local community.
