Carson High boys’ soccer drops season-opener on the road
The Senators traveled to Galena and quickly scared the Grizzlies by jumping out to a 3-0 lead Saturday morning.
However, Galena countered with four unanswered goals of its own to win the contest 4-3.
Omar Mora put together a hat trick for the Senator, scoring all three goals.
Emiliano Bravo tallied two assists on the day while freshman keeper Rene Gonzalez grabbed an assist as well.
“Rene Gonzalez, played an excellent game, but unfortunately our defense broke down,” said Carson head coach Frank Martinez. “I think Galena’s fitness was a key factor in the second half, but overall I’m excited because we did play well against a top team in the north.”
UP NEXT: Carson (0-1) travels to North Valleys (1-0) Wednesday after the Panthers bested Wooster 4-2 to start the season.
Beglin shoots a 68, Carson High girls golf takes fourth
Karen Beglin picked right back up where she left off to start her senior year with the Senators.
Thursday, the St. John’s women’s golf signee took second place at RedHawk Country Club in Sparks after shooting a 68.
Her round consisted of six birdies and an eagle on the 16th hole.
Teammate Sarah Wiggins also took home a top-10 finish after shooting an 89 for the Senators.
As a team, Carson tied for third place with Reno as both squads shot a 370. Bishop Manogue (355) and Wooster (359) took the top-two team scores.
Rhianna Redwine and Jamie McGee shot a 106 and 107, respectively, to round out the individual results for Carson.
Galena bests Carson High girl’s soccer in opener
The Galena Grizzlies held serve on their home field Saturday afternoon against Carson High with a 6-0 win.
Isabella Flocchini had five goals for the Grizzlies in the win.
UPNEXT: Carson (0-1) will travel to Douglas (0-0-1) Tuesday to take on their rivals. The Tigers tied 2-2 with Reno to open their season.
Carson boys and girls tennis fall to Bishop Manogue
The Senator boys’ and girls’ tennis teams fell against Bishop Manogue Monday.
The Miners defeated the Carson girls 18-0 while the final score of the boys contest was unavailable on MaxPreps.
Dayton boys split opening road contests
The Dayton High boys’ soccer team split its first two road contests of the season with a 3-2 loss to Fernley followed by a 5-3 win over Fallon.
Noah Gibson scored one of the two Dust Devil goals against Fernley.
“We were down by 3 up until the last 25 minutes. We turned the game around and almost tied it up,” said Dayton head coach Luis Melgarejo.
In Dayton’s 5-3 win over Fallon, the Dust Devils got two goals off the foot of Lance Peterson in the win. Caleb Sumsion, Gibson, and Juan Aguinaga each added a goal of their own.
“I'm excited for this season and also very thankful we have the opportunity to play,” said Melgarejo.
UP NEXT: Dayton (1-1) gets its first home contest a little sooner than originally scheduled, as the Dust Devils will host Lowry (1-0-1) Friday instead of playing its third consecutive road contest. Saturday, Dayton heads to Spring Creek (0-2).
Dayton volleyball splits weekend doubleheader
Dayton High School volleyball fell in the fifth set to Fernley before sweeping Fallon 3-0 Saturday.
Makayla Lawson and Riley Glynn led the way with seven kills apiece for the Dust Devils in the win over Fallon.
Glynn also posted a team-high 21 digs in the win while fellow senior Maile Connor had 11 digs of her own.
Lawson put together a team-best 14 kills in the five-set loss to Fernley Friday.
Connor and Hallie Peterson each had three solo blocks for Dayton.
UP NEXT: The Dust Devils (1-1) will play another Friday-Saturday set against Lowry (0-2) and Spring Creek (1-1).
Dayton girls’ soccer picks up early season tie
In the season opener Thursday, the Dayton High girls’ soccer team picked up a 2-2 draw against Fernley to earn a point.
The Dust Devils fell behind 2-0 at half, but responded with two goals in the second half.
Saturday, Fallon bested Dayton 7-0.
UP NEXT: Dayton (0-1-1) will host Lowry (0-1-1) as both Class 3A teams look for their respective first wins of the season.
Sierra Lutheran volleyball drops five-set thriller against Sage Ridge
The Scorpions trailed 2-0 to Sierra Lutheran Friday afternoon, but Sage Ridge was able to pick up the next three sets to secure the win.
Sierra Lutheran won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-16 before dropping the final three 25-12, 25-18, 15-10.
