The Carson Valley Food Closet expects a good turnout for its 28th annual Share Your Holiday Food Drive 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Carson Valley Inn.

The event has become the biggest food and fundraiser of the year, helping the food closet for the coming year, said Carson Valley Food Closet Director Sarah Sanchez.

“What we receive from this food drive keeps us full through the end of summer or even through fall, depending on how many families we served throughout the year,” said Sanchez.

As a result, from last year’s Share your Holiday Food Drive, the Carson Valley Food Closet received 284,107 pounds of food and $108,749 in donations.

“People are always so generous in this community,” said Sanchez. “What we’re hoping for is good weather, a good turn out and just good cheer all around.”

Per tradition Santa Claus is expected to arrive by helicopter and emergency vehicles will hang around for viewing.

“It’s always a fun event, people look forward to,” said Sanchez. “Sometimes, people ride up on their horses to drop off donations or car clubs will come through, so there are always those kinds of random things that make the day a little more exciting.”

The Carson Valley Food Closest is collecting nonperishable foods and Vitalant blood donation buses will be available for blood donations. There is no need to get out of your vehicle; volunteers will unload for you.

“This is a fun, family-friendly event with volunteer opportunities and tons of community generosity,” said Sanchez.
