Genoa, Nev. —Basque Fry Guest Sen. Tom Cotton reportedly let former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt’s plans to run for U.S. Senate against Catherine Cortez Masto out of the bag on Saturday. I heard the driver of the big billboard advertising Cortez Masto’s campaign was driving up and down Highway 395 in front of the Corley Ranch during the event.

The lightning fire up in Fay Canyon looks like it’s somewhat contained at less than an acre. Firefighters had to dodge a few rolling logs after the tree that was burning fell over late Friday. A helicopter is dropping water on it. The Horse Thief Canyon fire is under control.

The smoke is going to be with us through today and into Tuesday morning before the southwest wind starts sending it back the way it came. That wind will also bring increased danger of fire spread with a fire weather watch 2-11 p.m. Tuesday, that will likely be upgraded to a red flag warning by the end of today. Any significant break from the smoke is likely to be brief while the Dixie Fire continues to blaze away.

Visibility is down to 4 miles at Minden-Tahoe Airport at 5:15 a.m. and the air quality is literally in the red, reaching unhealthy levels across the Valley this morning, according to airnow.gov. The Ranchos air monitor isn’t online this morning.

The Tamarack Fire destroyed 11 homes and damaged two more in Douglas County. On Thursday, commissioners will consider a resolution to waive fees should the owners decide to rebuild.

There are 56 more applications for Tier 2 and Tier 3 VHRs than there are allotments. The higher tier vacation rentals are capped at 600. The county has renewed the search for the VHR advisory panel after that part of the ordinance was called out by a federal judge. Find out more at www.DouglasCountyNV.gov

Widespread haze and smoke are expected to continue today. The zephyr is forecast to pick up out of the west at 10-15 mph, gusting to 30 mph. The heat advisory is with us for another day, with the high expected to hit 99 degrees.
