Genoa, Nev. — Public comment on the possible sale of 28 acres of U.S. Forest Service land between Topsy and Jacks Valley Road opened on Thursday and should be done around Sept. 12. The property was included in the Douglas County Lands Bill that has been languishing in Congress for more than a decade. I’ll have more detail in Saturday’s edition.

Sale of that property could open up the possibility the county could punch Vista Grande through to Jacks Valley Road. There’s some money set aside from the old Redevelopment Area No. 1 still for that project.

The Census data released on Thursday shows that Douglas still hasn’t cracked 50,000 people and dropped to the seventh most populous county after being passed by Nye County.

Carson Valley has two Main Streets, and the 2021 Main Street Car Show Event isn’t on either of them. The show, presented by Mike Schiller is 4 p.m. today on Esmeralda Avenue in Minden. Proceeds go to benefit the Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club.

Carson Valley Scouts will be in Fuji Park 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for their Send a Scout to Camp Show. The proceeds go right where the name of the event says they’ll go, to help fund sending Scouts to camp.

Can I call a Model T a flivver? Find out at the Dangberg Historic Park 10 a.m. Saturday when the Silver State Model T Ford Club stops by for a presentation on the first automobile to become an icon.

Tonight’s movie in Gardnerville’s Heritage Park is “Thor: The Dark World.” They start setting up around 8:30 p.m. with the movie starting when it gets dark enough.

The God of Thunder may get a little accompaniment from Mother Nature tonight with showers and thunderstorms in the forecast between 3-11 p.m. The Weather Service is calling for a slight chance.

All the wind did on Thursday was bring more smoke into the Valley with visibilities dropping to 3 miles around lunch time and again last night. Today expect smoky skies before 2 p.m. and depending on what the thunderstorms do, maybe after that, too. The high’s forecast to be 96 degrees.
